Probabilistic Automata of Bounded Ambiguity

چکیده
Probabilistic automata are a computational model introduced by Michael Rabin, extending nondeterministic finite automata with probabilistic transitions. Despite its simplicity, this model is very expressive and many of the associated algorithmic questions are undecidable. In this work we focus on the emptiness problem, which asks whether a given probabilistic automaton accepts some word with probability higher than a given threshold. We consider a natural and well-studied structural restriction on automata, namely the degree of ambiguity, which is defined as the maximum number of accepting runs over all words. We observe that undecidability of the emptiness problem requires infinite ambiguity and so we focus on the case of finitely ambiguous probabilistic automata. Our main results are to construct efficient algorithms for analysing finitely ambiguous probabilistic automata through a reduction to a multi-objective optimisation problem, called the stochastic path problem. We obtain a polynomial time algorithm for approximating the value of finitely ambiguous probabilistic automata and a quasi-polynomial time algorithm for the emptiness problem for 2-ambiguous probabilistic automata. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation

General Algorithms for Testing the Ambiguity of Finite Automata and the Double-Tape Ambiguity of Finite-State Transducers
We present efficient algorithms for testing the finite, polynomial, and exponential ambiguity of finite automata with ǫ-transitions. We give an algorithm for testing the exponential ambiguity of an automaton A in time O(|A| E ), and finite or polynomial ambiguity in time O(|A| E ), where |A|E denotes the number of transitions of A. These complexities significantly improve over the previous best...
متن کاملCompleteness in Probabilistic Metric Spaces
The idea of probabilistic metric space was introduced by Menger and he showed that probabilistic metric spaces are generalizations of metric spaces. Thus, in this paper, we prove some of the important features and theorems and conclusions that are found in metric spaces. At the beginning of this paper, the distance distribution functions are proposed. These functions are essential in defining p...
متن کاملConnections among Space-bounded and Multihead Probabilistic Automata
We show that the heads of multihead unbounded-error or bounded-error or one-sided-error probabilistic nite automata are equivalent alternatives to the storage tapes of the corresponding probabilistic Turing machines (Theorem 1). These results parallel the classic ones concerning deterministic and nondeterministic automata. Several important properties of logarithmic-space (nondeterministic and ...

This paper presents efficient algorithms for testing the finite, polynomial, and exponential ambiguity of finite automata with ǫtransitions. It gives an algorithm for testing the exponential ambiguity of an automaton A in time O(|A|2E), and finite or polynomial ambiguity in time O(|A|3E), where |A|E denotes the number of transitions of A. These complexities significantly improve over the previo...
متن کاملStochastic Satisfiability Modulo Theory: A Novel Technique for the Analysis of Probabilistic Hybrid Systems
The analysis of hybrid systems exhibiting probabilistic behaviour is notoriously difficult. To enable mechanised analysis of such systems, we extend the reasoning power of arithmetic satisfiability-modulo-theory solving (SMT) by a comprehensive treatment of randomized (a.k.a. stochastic) quantification over discrete variables within the mixed Boolean-arithmetic constraint system. This provides ...
